Growing Adenium from seeds

It all started when I got to know Adenium is  easy to grow from seed .I had collected seeds a year ago and store them with other seeds and forgot about it .When shuffling and searching for winter flower seeds found them within .

How to germinate Adenium seeds :

Things you'll  need

- A plastic container or A plastic  basket for good drainage (with lots of holes )

- Gravel or river sand ( also known as bajri locally ) available at construction sites or shops that sell construction material

- And off course the seeds (you can remove or remain the hair attached to it )

   - Cover the seeds with thin layer of river sand and water generously
- Keep them in semi shade place and water in two days with sprinkler water

                                                         Adenium seeds planted in river sand

After five days seeds start germinating and within a month   they were

I got 60 % germination from seeds ,may be because the seeds were old  .

Winter is setting in and summer annuals are taking backseat its good time to collect summer flower seeds .

Growing Avocado Plant from seed

I have  always been fascinated with the idea of  growing fruit plant from seed .Although it requires a lot of patience to grow a plant from seed to reach its fruiting stage,but that is joyous part of gardening .And when we talk about fruit like Avocado that is exotic in our region its definitely thrilling.
  It all started when I bought Avocado fruit from grocery and got to know its seed could actually germinate but wasn't sure ,in any case I was throwing it so thought of giving it try .

I prepared potting soil involving 3 : 1 ratio of Cocopeat to Compost  only , no soil at all .

Here's the seed after eating fruit

After planting it in pot

After one month four days here's a sprout

Sowing Flower seeds for Winter / Spring

Winter Flowers are adored by everyone for their beauty and different varieties and colors.Mostly winter flowers bloom profusely in spring in our region .It creates heavenly scenic beauty in the garden.There are seedlings available in garden centers between the months of September to early December to plant seedlings to get a show by the time spring strikes .But not everyone gets access to plant nurseries and garden centers to get some ,you can easily start your flower seedlings by getting seeds online or from seeds selling shops .

Once you have got seeds to start sowing process you need

- A container or pot you can take a plastic basket too ,container should be wide in size preferably ,depth is not that important ;
- Garden Soil ,whatever is available in your place make sure its clean from dust particles and gravels ;
- A plastic sheet or wrap or even a polythene would do ;
- A string or Rubber band to tie the sheet
- Coco peat its good for water retention which helps in germination but still its optional(you can find it online or any garden shop )

I have started flower seeds of Cornflower ,Carnation,Dahlia ,sweet peas and more.

A container could be like this

                               A plastic container with Dahlia seeds dispersed on it

                                                          A Plastic Basket

 After filling container from soil seeds should dispersed gently giving each seed  ample space

Next step is making thin layer of cocopeat on container after seeds are placed

Last step is to cover your container with plastic transparent sheet or cling wrap  and tie it with rubber band or string

A plastic cover helps in easy and rapid germination and retains moisture in soil which helps seeds to sprout  .

Happy Sowing !!

In the next post  Ill try to talk about  sowing of vegetable seeds .

Lovely Autumn

After a long hit and miss monsoon weather ,we can feel the breeze of autumn in our place.Garden is filled with riot of colors .

Plumeria pudica or Wild plumeria is a longtime blomming with cheerful white flowers emerging from spoon shaped leaves

Vinca has been native plant in our environment for its heat bearing capacity. This dark vinca is hybrid specie .

Another drought tolerant plant ,perfect for our atmostphere Jatropha plant twinkles bright in sunshine.

Dwarf Dahlia blooming is indication of  advent of Autumn

 Hibiscus ,the Hawaiin  variety are becoming my favourites for the blooms that are spectacular

It has been good favorable weather for Tithonia  for long summer days have supplied constant blooms

Butterfly Pea has adopted my garden very well and given many more plants probably due to easy dispersion of seeds freely

When we talk about self seeders, Four o clock grows like a weed  in garden and I have no heart to pluck them off  due to there easy no care growing capability, of course beautiful blooms

Dianthus starts blooming with fall in temperature.

Gaillardias are garden friends for my region ,they thrive through long summer and blooms in winter too.

Since autumn is best time to prepare your garden for spring blooms and winter vegetables ,its time to start sowing seeds of flowers and vegetables. In the next post I ll try to discuss easy germination of winter flower seeds .

Tailorbird nest spotted

Tailorbird is the common scene in my garden that small insectivorous bird with greenish body ,rust colored forehead and crown.Its chirp is sweet to ears ,frolicking around within leaves and hedge of garden is a watchable affair .

I have never known about its nest until spotted in my garden on Asoca tree .I was amazed with how a bird uses leaves to make nest by weaving leaves .I researched about it and got to know ,The edges of a large leaf are pierced and sewn together with plant fibre or spider silk to make a cradle in which the actual nest is built.

                                                      Leaves are sewed to make nest

On giving a zoom to camera few hatchling were easily spotted

It uses leaves as a pouch to carry nest safely and thereby protecting its child or hatchlings .It seems to be nesting period for birds as pigeons in my backyard are also making nest on porch .
